Aespa Break Out Among New K-Pop Acts With 100 Million Views On Debut Music Video

With huge album sales and meaningful international mainstream coverage, 2020 will go down as one of the strongest years for new K-pop groups and Aespa has landed their own breakout moment thanks to their performance on YouTube.

The four-member girl group saw their music video to debut single “Black Mamba” cross the 100-million view mark on January 8, 2021. The feat not only makes them the first rookie of the past year to hit the mark, but also makes them the fastest K-pop act to hit the milestone target with their debut video in 51 days.

No doubt Aespa—consisting of members Karina, Winter, Giselle and NingNing—had a slew of interest swirling around them to get fans clicking. The quartet was the first new act since 2016 to debut under the legendary K-pop label SM Entertainment (the latest after the label announced its ambitious boy-band project NCT) and first new female act in more than six years (following international favorites Red Velvet who debuted in the summer of 2014).

Also fueling interest was the act’s unique concept of not only being a full-fledged K-pop act but one that that creates an additional story-telling experience via virtual avatar counterparts. According to their origin story, the “ae” sides of Karina, Winter, Giselle and NingNing are made up from their personalized data inside a virtual world making this group act both as a quartet and octet if you include their virtual complements. The titular “Black Mamba” in their debut single refers to a force threatening to interfere with the connection between the two sides of this girl group, all laying the groundwork for an intriguing and exciting larger story and universe for Aespa.

The members put out a statement shortly after hitting their achievement. “We were absolutely delighted to hear that our ‘Black Mamba’ music video reached more than 100 million views,” they said via press release. “It’s very meaningful to have achieved this with our debut song. We’d like to thank all our fans for their incredible love and support. In 2021, we’ll continue to bring great music and bright energy and we hope everyone looks forward to it.”

Aespa is expected to put out new music early into 2021 with all signs pointing to additional international activities for the multinational girl group whose members represent Korea, Japan and China.
