- The US president-elect named Scott Bessent as the new Treasury Secretary.
- Paul Atkins, former SEC commissioner, is also being considered for the role.
- Former Coinbase legal chief Brian Brooks is also in talks with Trump’s team.
President-elect Donald Trump has named Scott Bessent, an experienced investor and hedge fund manager, as the next Treasury Secretary. This significant appointment marks the first major move by Trump’s administration in shaping U.S. financial policy.
FOX Business journalist Eleanor Terrett revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that Trump’s advisory team is not only considering candidates for the SEC Chair but also evaluating leadership for the National Economic Council and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). These decisions highlight Trump’s efforts to deliver on campaign promises to reshape U.S. financial regulation.
Top Candidates for SEC Chair Role
Paul Atkins, a former SEC commissioner under President George W. Bush, has emerged as the leading candidate for the SEC Chair position, according to FOX Business correspondents Eleanor Terrett and Charles Gasparino. Another strong contender is Brad Bondi, a white-collar defense attorney at Paul Hastings and brother to Pam Bondi, who has been nominated for Attorney General.

Bondi has a history with Elon Musk, the chief executive of electric automobile manufacturer Tesla, and represented the company in 2018 when Musk was sued by the SEC over his tweet about making Tesla private.
Brian Brooks Joins the SEC Candidate List
Brian Brooks, a former chief legal officer at Coinbase, is also under consideration for the SEC Chair role. Brooks, who served as Acting Comptroller of the Currency during Trump’s administration, is actively lobbying for the position.
Reports suggest that Trump’s team is prioritizing candidates with a crypto-friendly stance. All three contenders—Atkins, Bondi, and Brooks—are aligned with this objective. A senior member of Trump’s transition team confirmed that the next SEC Chair will support cryptocurrency-friendly policies.
