In 2023, the Super Bowl had two football teams pitted against each other and a halftime show that ultimately caused controversy with some while really hitting chords with others. However, something was missing… Do you all know what it was? Here’s a hint. It involved television, advertisements, and digital currency…
This Year’s Super Bowl Featured No BTC Commercials
For those that watched this year’s Super Bowl, you likely noticed that no crypto-centered commercials appeared on television. This was a huge difference from last year given the high number of crypto-related advertisements sports fans were subjected to. Some made people laugh, while others didn’t like that they were potentially being told what to do or how to think.
One of the most prominent ones involved Larry David of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” fame. No doubt the spot will be remembered in a negative light given it was for FTX, the now defunct crypto exchange enveloped in a swelling arena of bankruptcy. Its founder and chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried is also awaiting trial for fraud at his parents’ home in Northern California.
For those who can’t remember the Larry David commercial, here’s a recap. The commercial aired for the first time during the Super Bowl of 2022 and showed David playing historical versions of himself that’re surprised when humans achieve big things like inventing the lightbulb.
At the end of the commercial, the modern version of David is told FTX is a good way for newbie customers to get into crypto. He responds with:
Eh, I don’t think so, and I’m never wrong about this stuff. Never!
The ad then said, “Don’t be like Larry,” and prompts people to get involved with the trading platform. What’s rough is that most of FTX’s former traders are probably wishing they had been a little more like Larry.
The ad drew criticism from social media users, with one person writing:
Larry David in a crypto ad is a pretty succinct answer to, ‘Is it ever possible to have enough money?’
A separate Twitter user posted:
Larry David being in a crypto commercial is the single most devastating thing to ever happen to me. Please give me space to process.
Is FTX to Blame?
FTX has greatly contributed to the many problems that surround the digital currency space. After the fall of the exchange and the volatility of the world’s leading assets, it was decided by many that the crypto space didn’t deserve any more attention, and that the industry was a haven for illicit behavior.
This is evident now that the Super Bowl featured no advertisements for crypto. The space is in its worst position right now and will likely take some time to heal from the weaknesses it experienced in 2022, though perhaps the time will come when the space regains its composure and riles sports fans again.
