South Korea Court Sentences 3 Crypto Scammers to Prison

South Korea’s district court has sentenced three men for orchestrating a $416K crypto fraud scheme.

South Korea’s 610 Million won Crypto Fraud

Busan District Court has imprisoned crypto scammers for running an illegal crypto investment firm in June 2019 and deceiving investors by defrauding them with false promises of “facilitating trade around 1,000 quality coins (virtual currencies) from around the world.” They defrauded the investors of 610 million won.

The scammers also promised investors a 30% monthly return on their initial investments and claimed that their proprietary trading algorithm earned profits by exploiting market fluctuations. Meanwhile, investors’ funds were splurged on personal expenses. The court sentenced the mastermind of the offense to four and a half years in prison. One of the culprits was sentenced to three and a half years, and the other to two years and six months.

According to local media reports, the presiding judge, Kim Yong-gyun, stated, “Mr. A and others committed the crime by taking advantage of the victims’ lack of knowledge about coin investment,” and “the method and circumstances of the crime, such as deceiving investors by exchanging coins, are very poor.”

The case underscores South Korean authorities’ growing scrutiny of crypto-related crimes. The country has introduced stricter regulations and oversight to safeguard investors and uphold market integrity in the past few years. According to legal experts, the ruling sends a message to would-be criminals that fraud is a serious offense in the world of crypto.

With the crypto space booming, South Korea has imposed a stricter crackdown on fraud. As part of this step, the country established a Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office-run Joint Investigation Unit (JIU) for Virtual Asset Crimes.
