The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is gearing up to review an extensive slate of crypto-related ETFs in 2025, with more than 70 proposals awaiting evaluation.
According to Bloomberg’s Eric Balchunas, this year’s lineup features a broad mix—ranging from well-known tokens like XRP and Solana to meme-themed offerings and complex derivative-based products. Balchunas commented on X that the lineup includes “everything from XRP, Litecoin, and Solana to Penguins, Doge, and 2x Melania,” hinting at what he called a “wild year” ahead.
The review cycle comes as major investors grow increasingly optimistic about digital assets. A recent survey conducted by Coinbase and EY-Parthenon shows that over 80% of institutional players plan to expand their exposure to crypto markets in 2025. Still, analysts warn that approval doesn’t necessarily mean mass uptake—particularly for ETFs centered on lesser-known altcoins.
Balchunas likened ETF approval to getting your music onto a streaming platform: it improves access but doesn’t guarantee popularity.
Grayscale’s historical data also backs up the caution. While spot Bitcoin ETFs saw over $100 billion in inflows in the past year, enthusiasm for altcoin-based funds has been far more modest. Sygnum Bank’s Katalin Tischhauser estimates that new altcoin ETFs might only attract hundreds of millions to $1 billion combined, a fraction of Bitcoin’s appeal.
Even so, more complex instruments—like ETFs tied to crypto options—could spark deeper institutional interest. These products allow for more strategic exposure to assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which some analysts believe could help drive major price moves. Jeff Park of Bitwise, for instance, sees crypto options as a potential gateway to significant upside.
Meanwhile, ARK Invest added staked Solana to two of its ETFs on April 21, making it the first time U.S. investors have had access to spot SOL within an ETF structure.
