Not many people dare to drastically change the direction of their lives, especially when everything seems fine. Riccardo Spagni, a man born in Johannesburg, South Africa, initially lived a fairly stable life with his wife in an import-export business.

However, the traditional world of trade was not enough to satisfy his curiosity. Instead, he began to be interested in a world that was still looked down upon at that time—Bitcoin.

More Than Monero: The Many Sides of Riccardo Spagni

Around 2011, when most people didn’t even understand what crypto was, Spagni began to slowly dive into this world. He did have an educational background in informatics and logistics, so understanding technology was nothing new to him.

His role as lead maintainer made him the person who pushed for the birth of advanced privacy features such as ring signatures and stealth addresses. Thanks to that, Monero grew into one of the crypto assets known to be the most difficult to track user transactions.

However, even though his name is closely associated with Monero, Riccardo did not stop there. He is also involved in the development of several other projects. One of them is Tari, a digital asset protocol designed to facilitate ownership of digital assets.

He also developed MyMonero so that users can access Monero more easily. And to help cross-asset payments, he founded Globee in 2016, a multi-currency crypto payment processing service.

Furthermore, Riccardo is known as an outspoken figure on social media. His X account (formerly Twitter) is filled with comments, jokes, and opinions about crypto that often invite reactions. This communication style makes him popular with many people, but it also often reaps debate. He is not the type to polish words to make them look sweet.

On the other hand, Spagni’s life has not been entirely trouble-free. In 2021, he was briefly arrested in the United States on old South African fraud charges while working for a company called Cape Cookies. The charges allege that he made fake invoices worth more than $90,000 between 2009 and 2011.

While this case has nothing to do with crypto, it has put him back in the spotlight. He denies all charges and is currently undergoing legal proceedings.

Even so, his life goes on. He lives in Plettenberg Bay, a coastal town in South Africa, and seems to enjoy his free time with hobbies like riding a small boat, playing with his dog, and flying a drone. He’s not the type of crypto figure who just sits in a leather chair and watches the price screen—he’s more laid-back, but still sharp in discussions about technology and privacy.

When it comes to who truly lives the ideals of crypto, Riccardo Spagni is probably at the top of the list. He doesn’t promise the world, he doesn’t sell empty dreams. But through lines of code, he’s helped shape the direction of technology that we enjoy today.
