The Pi Network has announced an upcoming hackathon challenging its community to build an app locating local businesses accepting PI, their cryptocurrency.

This “Pi Commerce Hackathon” comes on the heels of December’s successful PiFest event, where thousands of Pi Network users, called Pioneers, gathered virtually from 155 countries. The enthusiasm for using PI coins locally made evident the need for a platform connecting PI-accepting merchants and customers.

In response, Pi Core Team is supporting the hackathon for Pioneers to develop a Commerce App prototype into a fully functional tool. This app will allow users to find nearby stores accepting PI, view business profiles, menus, loyalty programs, and make PI payments.

The hackathon kicks off February 1st with the release of the app prototype Pioneers can build on using Pi’s open source software license. Teams then have one month to collaborate on developing the most useful, user-friendly app.

The winning team will have their app featured on Pi Day, March 14th, gaining worldwide exposure to Pi’s user base. They may also receive hosting support from Pi to remove barriers like server costs.

Hackathon registration is open now for interested developers, who are encouraged to form teams combining complementary skills. While following the prototype, participants can add unique, localized features to make the app their own. Submissions are due March 3rd, and winners are announced on Pi Day.
