TRM Labs says North Korea-affiliated hackers were involved in approximately one-third of all cryptocurrency exploits and thefts in 2023, netting around $600 million in funds. This brings the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) total take from crypto projects to almost $3 billion over the past six years. However, the amount stolen in hacks in 2023 was roughly half that taken the previous year, with many of the attacks using social engineering techniques to acquire private keys for projects. The drop in stolen funds is attributed to fewer major hacks, successful law enforcement actions, better cybersecurity controls, and price volatility over the past year.
