Crypto adoption is accelerating worldwide in 2025, and memecoins are playing a surprising but pivotal role, according to a new report from cryptocurrency exchange Gemini.
The Global State of Crypto study found significant increases in ownership across key regions. In the U.K., ownership jumped to 24%, up from 18% in 2024.
The U.S. saw a smaller but notable rise from 20% to 21%, while France climbed to 21% from 18%. Singapore leads all surveyed countries with a 28% crypto adoption rate, up from 26%.
The report analyzed responses from over 7,200 consumers across the U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Singapore, and Australia.
Trump Administration and Memecoins Drive Growth
Two major drivers are pushing this expansion: memecoins and political support. In the U.S., President Donald Trump’s administration has backed crypto policies, most notably by launching the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) to expand national BTC holdings tax-free. The administration also promised not to sell its existing 198,000 BTC stash.
Meanwhile, memecoins have emerged as a gateway for new users. According to Gemini, 94% of people who hold memecoins also own other cryptocurrencies. “Memecoins serve as a significant onramp for new investors to digital assets,” the report notes, suggesting they are a catalyst for broader crypto adoption.
Memecoin Trends by Country
France leads the memecoin charge, with 67% of crypto investors in the country holding meme-based tokens. Other top adopters include Singapore (59%), Italy (58%), the U.K. (57%), the U.S. (55%), and Australia (45%).
Interestingly, many users say memecoins were their first crypto investment. In the U.S., 31% of those who own both traditional and meme assets bought memecoins first. This trend was echoed in Australia (30%), the U.K. (28%), and Singapore (23%).
The memecoin sector now boasts a market cap of over $77 billion, roughly 2.2% of the total $3.55 trillion crypto market. Dogecoin (DOGE) leads with a $34.8 billion cap, followed by Shiba Inu (SHIB) at $8.6 billion, Pepe (PEPE) at $6.2 billion, and Trump-themed memecoin TRUMP at $2.6 billion.
As mainstream awareness grows, memecoins appear to be doing more than generating laughs—they’re onboarding the next wave of crypto investors.
