Crypto exchange Kraken has officially launched derivatives trading in the United Kingdom, targeting professional clients under the U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) guidelines.
The move strengthens Kraken’s presence in its second-largest market and underscores growing institutional demand for crypto derivatives.
According to Kraken’s head of derivatives, Alexia Theodorou, the product rollout began quietly in recent weeks to test functionality with a small group. It is now fully open to all eligible professional clients following a dedicated onboarding process.
Doubling Down on Derivatives Amid Growing Demand
Derivatives trading accounts for 70%–75% of total global crypto trading volume, and Kraken sees this trend accelerating. While spot and derivatives trading are currently neck-and-neck on the platform, Theodorou noted that derivatives are outpacing spot in overall growth.
“This is a major investment for us in the UK,” she said. “More institutions are entering the space, and derivatives are clearly becoming the dominant format. That’s why we’re doubling down.”
The launch marks a significant step for Kraken as it continues to align its offerings with market demand and regulatory requirements, catering to sophisticated investors looking for advanced trading tools.
