TRON founder Justin Sun has launched a legal fight against Bloomberg, accusing the media outlet of breaching an agreement to keep his cryptocurrency holdings private.
The case, filed in a Delaware federal court on August 1, revolves around Bloomberg’s plan to include him in its Billionaires Index and publish detailed estimates of his portfolio.
Sun claims he only provided the data to confirm his overall net worth after Bloomberg allegedly assured him — in writing and verbally — that the specifics would remain confidential.
Instead, he says a draft profile sent to him in late July broke down his assets coin-by-coin, including an estimate of 60 billion TRX, as well as significant amounts of Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT.
The TRON founder argues that revealing such numbers could expose him to serious risks, pointing to a recent uptick in high-value crypto crimes such as kidnappings, hacking attempts, and extortion schemes.
In the past year, incidents in France and the U.S. have shown how crypto holders can be targeted for their digital wealth.
After sending Bloomberg a cease-and-desist letter on August 2, Sun sought an injunction to block publication of the asset breakdown and limit reporting to general categories.
Bloomberg’s legal team reportedly indicated they would go ahead regardless, arguing the information was already in the public domain.
The dispute has stirred debate in the crypto space, with some speculating Sun’s push for secrecy could stem from regulatory, tax, or political sensitivities — especially given the large share of TRX he is alleged to control.
Sun is now asking the court for temporary and permanent orders preventing Bloomberg from releasing specific figures, as well as coverage of his legal costs. Bloomberg says it has acted within its rights and plans to challenge the lawsuit.
The outcome could shape how much privacy prominent crypto figures can expect — and how far financial media will go in exposing their fortunes.
