  • Thomas the founder of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) on Twitter, has detailed how he nearly lost all of his ETH to a social engineering fraud. In a lengthy thread, he detailed how scammers almost got him.

Arrow, his DAO, is developing open-source VTOL aircraft and an air taxi protocol. He reported that around two weeks ago, someone named heckshine contacted him. Heckshine claimed to work at Ubisoft and offered assistance with 3D design and animation.

Heckshine also has a friend named Linh who is interested in metaverse and VTOLs and has a brother-in-law who works for Boeing. All that remained was for Lihn to weave the basic web.

Linh claimed to be working on the Space Falcon metaverse project and sought collaboration with Arrow DAO.

Thomas claimed that before proceeding with the agreement, he examined Space Falcon to see that it is a legitimate project on Solana and found Lihn’s name on it.

All of this, however, turned out to be a big con on a vast scale. Linh even invited Thomas to have a tour of the Wisk factory. The red flags began to appear after Linh alerted him of a new NFT staking program that had just been released. She requested that he obtain NFT in order to assist in the testing of the app.

Instead of receiving the NFT in his regular wallet, Thomas opened a second wallet specifically for that reason. 

Fortunately, Thomas read through the contract first and realized that it had a method that would allow the scammers to transmit all of the wrapped ETH to his wallet.

A lesson to be learned: Become Scam-proof

Crypto scams have gained in popularity in recent years, with scammers adopting a variety of techniques. However, complex social engineering schemes of this caliber are uncommon in the crypto world.

While this attempt failed, it demonstrates how far crypto scammers are prepared to go. The scammers in this case were pros who executed everything to perfection. They plagiarised an existing project and obtained a domain name that is remarkably similar to it.
