California is stepping into the Web3 arena with the launch of a new government initiative backed by crypto heavyweights like Coinbase and Ripple.
The state’s newly formed California Breakthrough Project is exploring ways to improve public-sector efficiency through blockchain, AI, and Web3 technologies.
The task force, which has already convened at Ripple’s San Francisco headquarters, includes major tech companies such as Snap Inc. and Anduril. Although it lacks clearly defined goals for now, the project signals a broader push toward digital transformation in state operations.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating California has always led in tech and should now do the same with blockchain.
However, the initiative isn’t without controversy. Critics have drawn comparisons to Elon Musk’s defunct D.O.G.E. agency and raised concerns over ties between Coinbase and former President Trump—potentially clashing with California’s Democratic base.
As crypto adoption grows and state policies evolve, California’s attempt to integrate Web3 into its government infrastructure could either set a national example—or become another politically fraught experiment.
