BNB Chain Teases New Blockchain with Privacy Features to Compete With Crypto Exchanges

After speeding up block times and cracking down on malicious MEV, BNB Chain is poised to build a new blockchain with near-instant transactions and built-in privacy.

BNB Chain has outlined plans for a new blockchain network that could potentially match the speed of centralized exchanges.

In a blog post on July 17, the team proposed a next-generation Layer 1 chain that can confirm transactions in under 150 milliseconds and handle more than 20,000 transactions per second. The new system will include on-chain computing tools and built-in privacy features.

It remains unclear whether this indicates a separate network or major updates to the existing BNB Chain. A representative told The Defiant that “the BNB Community is still in the exploratory phase, actively discussing and welcoming different proposals.”

“Users want to transact or interact with smart contracts without exposing sensitive details publicly, and also, professional traders are eager to introduce more traditional financial services to protect their trading. We will work with our community to explore native protocol-level privacy infrastructure to empower and enable these requirements with the balance between regulatory and compliance and tech efficiency,” the representative for BNB Chain told The Defiant.

It’s also yet to be seen if the privacy features will be comparable to Litecoin’s MimbleWimble upgrade — which raised concerns among crypto exchanges regarding AML rules — but the team claims BNB Chain will introduce “native privacy features for both token transfers and smart contract calls and enable compliance-friendly confidentiality at the protocol level.”

Boosting Capacity

In the long term, the team says the new blockchain will move beyond the current EVM structure, as a redesigned virtual machine will support parallel processing and larger-scale applications.

To handle increased traffic, BNB Chain is increasing its block gas limit by 10 times and introducing a new Rust-based client, built on Ethereum’s Reth, a faster tool for running and syncing the network.

“By increasing the block gas limit to 1G, 10 times the current capacity, we’re preparing the chain to support high-volume onchain use, including up to 5,000 DEX swaps per second,” the BNB Chain team.

It also plans to make smart contracts run faster by bundling common actions together, and to speed up how the network reads and stores data by improving its database system.

Since early 2025, the BNB Chain team has rolled out multiple upgrades, cutting block times from 3 seconds to 0.75 seconds and reducing finality to 1.875 seconds to improve performance. The team claims that these changes have led to a 95% drop in malicious MEV activity and helped the network reach a peak of 17.6 million transactions in a single day.

Following the announcement, the price of the BNB token surged 8% to $740, according to data from The Defiant’s price pages.
