Space tourism is taking a leap into the world of digital assets.
NYSE-listed payment solutions provider Shift4 Payments has joined forces with Jeff Bezos’ aerospace venture, Blue Origin, to let future astronauts book their seats using cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.
Through this new collaboration, space flight tickets aboard Blue Origin’s reusable New Shepard rocket can now be paid for in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, USDT, or USDC.
The process will be supported by Shift4’s payment technology, enabling customers to complete transactions through widely used crypto wallets such as Coinbase and MetaMask.
Blue Origin has already sent more than 75 passengers beyond the Kármán Line, and now those aiming for the “edge of space” will have more flexibility in how they pay for the experience.
Shift4 CEO Taylor Lauber said the partnership is part of the company’s mission to redefine global commerce, noting that they’re now “taking that vision beyond Earth.”
Meanwhile, Shift4’s Head of Crypto, Alex Wilson, highlighted the growing importance of digital currencies for major purchases, pointing to the $4 trillion market cap of crypto assets as a sign of their increasing role in high-value transactions.
With this move, space tourism is not only becoming more accessible but also embracing the rapidly expanding crypto economy — setting the stage for digital assets to fund the next wave of commercial space exploration.
