He pointed to his early support for the industry—recalling that he converted his first three mayoral paychecks into cryptocurrency back in 2022—as a sign of long-term commitment, not political posturing.
Next week’s summit will bring together top crypto firms to explore how the industry can partner with the city. But Adams’ ambitions go beyond networking events—he’s pushing back against what he sees as overly strict regulations, including the New York Department of Financial Services’ (NYDFS) controversial BitLicense, a longstanding barrier for crypto startups operating in the state.
Still, Adams acknowledged that oversight is necessary, especially in protecting investors. “Regulations must strike the right balance,” he said, warning that excessive rules could stifle innovation in one of the city’s fastest-growing sectors.
Framing the rise of blockchain, tokenization, and crypto as a “technological revolution,” the mayor emphasized that this is no longer a future-facing vision. “The moment is now,” he said, positioning New York not just as a financial capital, but as the beating heart of fintech.
As he gears up for re-election, Adams is aligning himself with a broader movement of pro-crypto policy voices, echoing sentiments shared by figures like Donald Trump—who has also shifted toward a more crypto-friendly stance.
