58% of Argentinians Disapprove of President Javier Milei Following Libra Crypto Scandal

A recent poll revealed that nearly 58% of Argentinians no longer trust President Javier Milei following his involvement in the $4.6 billion Libra crypto scandal.

The survey, conducted by polling platform Zuban Córdoba, questioned 1,600 respondents in March, asking about their trust in Milei over a month after the scandal broke.

Loss of Trust in Milei After Libra Scandal

The poll results showed that 57.6% of respondents disapproved of Milei, while only 36% still expressed confidence in him. The remaining 6.4% were uncertain. This marked a significant shift in public perception, with Milei’s image and approval ratings taking a substantial hit in recent months. His national management approval dropped from 47.3% in November to 41.6% in March.

Zuban Córdoba highlighted that negativity surrounding Milei has continued to rise, reflecting growing concerns about his leadership as more issues emerge on the political front.

Mixed Poll Results Amid Libra Scandal

Although the Zuban Córdoba poll painted a bleak picture for Milei, other surveys suggest a more mixed response. A study by the University of San Andrés, conducted between March 11 and 20, found that Milei’s approval rating had dropped to 45%. However, data from Morning Consult, gathered from February 27 to March 5, indicated that Milei still held a 62.4% approval rating even after the Libra scandal.

Libra Token Scandal and Milei’s Response

Milei has distanced himself from the Libra scandal, claiming that he did not promote the Libra token but merely “spread the word” about it in a February 14 post on X. Following his post, the Libra token saw a massive surge to a $4.6 billion market cap before plummeting nearly 94% in just a few hours. Fraud lawsuits have since been filed against him over his involvement.

Political Landscape Ahead of Argentina’s Election

Despite the controversy, Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, still leads in the race for the upcoming October 2025 Argentine election. According to recent data, 36.7% of voters support Milei’s libertarian party, compared to 32.5% for the Unión por la Patria opposition party. However, Milei’s handling of inflation remains a contentious issue, with only 43% of respondents believing he has effectively controlled it. Furthermore, 63% oppose his efforts to secure a new loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
