The University Of Hong Kong Sets Up A Blockchain-Powered System To Track Construction Quality

  • Blockchain technology is now being used for construction quality monitoring in Hong Kong.
  • An architecture research team at the HKU has developed a blockchain-based system to remotely keep an eye on the quality of construction of student residences.
  • The blockchain-based system adoption came following the global pandemic of Covid 19 when things were inaccessible due to the lockdown.

Blockchain Technology Expanding Itself Quite Well

Blockchain technology is not only limited to cryptocurrencies as it is being used for several things now. An architecture research team at the University of Hong Kong has developed a system based on blockchain to remotely keep an eye on the quality of construction of student residences.

According to a press release, the system, by the name E-Inspection 2.0, facilitates the management of construction quality inspection documents, making sure construction site photos and back-and-forth signed inspection files are all accountable, traceable, and immutable.

According to the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the system based on blockchain is also utilized to record temperature, vibration, humidity, and location data collected by sensors to track the transportation of building modules. And also to find out in case they have been damaged by moisture or other environmental factors,

The system is being used for the Wong Chuk Hang student residence, a new dormitory project of HKU. The project has adopted the modular integrated construction (MiC) technique.

Under the MiC, approximately a thousand blocks were assembled in a factory in the Guangdong Province of mainland China and further transported to the construction site in Hong Kong for stacking up to a whole building.

The adoption of the blockchain technology for remote quality inspection came following the Covid-19 pandemic when the world was enveloped in a lockdown. The crisis gave rise to quality inspectors not being able to access the plant in Guangdong.

Seems like the use cases of blockchain are constantly increasing as the crypto underlying technology is now highly helping the University of Hong Kong.
