Telegram, a popular messaging app, has released an upgrade that allows users to register using blockchain-based anonymous numbers rather than mobile phone numbers. To the delight of privacy-conscious users, Telegram will allow its users to conceal their phone numbers from everyone, rather than only those they haven’t registered to the service.
The instant chat service has risen in popularity among crypto users. This change is part of a larger 9.2 upgrade that went live on December 6 and allowed users to set expiration dates for messages in new conversations.
Blockchain-powered Anonymous Numbers
Fragment, a decentralized auction platform created by Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, will sell users the “blockchain-powered anonymous numbers” they need to access the service.
It’s true that Fragment offers Telegram-exclusive user names and anonymous phone numbers for purchase. Telegram’s The Open Network token is used for in-app purchases. However, U.S. users are out of luck since Fragment does not currently provide service to residents of the United States.
After acquiring a number, users may use it to get a verification code through a text message after logging into Telegram. Durov said on November 30 through his Telegram channel that the business was developing a set of decentralized tools in reaction to the FTX fiasco the previous month.
Fragment provides users with the option to buy a random number at any time for 9 TON ($16), or to buy and sell numbers in an auction system. Telegram seems to make use of this time to solidify its position in the crypto realm.
