But luckily, we can use technologies like Blockchain to help us fill the gap. I want to highlight some examples for how this can be accomplished with blockchain.

Blockchain can provide a solution by creating a secure and immutable record of a company’s environmental practices. Companies can then demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by providing transparent and auditable records of their environmental initiatives.
Blockchain technology can also be used to create a more efficient and sustainable energy grid. The current energy grid is centralized and relies heavily on fossil fuels. Over 60% of U.S. Energy is generated by fossil fuels year-over-year. This system is not only environmentally damaging, but it is also vulnerable to cyber-attacks and other security risks that could lead to environmental disaster. Blockchain can be used to create a more decentralized energy grid that can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase the resilience of our energy infrastructure.
In a decentralized energy grid, you can more easily integrate renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, which are often located in remote areas and can be difficult to integrate into the current centralized energy grid scheme.
Imagine having localized power stations in each town or city, connected directly to renewable energy sources in the surrounding area, without having to rely on massive centralized sources powered by fossil fuels. You could avoid voltage imbalances and fluctuations, rise and reverse power flow and even have better control over costly energy prices generated by corporate and industrial demand.
As an added bonus, the energy grid can incorporate a tokenization incentive program for homeowners that invest in renewables like solar or wind. Often times, homeowners have a surplus in energy that goes to waste that could be fed back into the energy grid to help provide power to the local vicinity. Tokenization would help account for this surplus energy and could be used to reward homeowners for investing in renewable energy sources in the form of tax credits, rebates, or straight-forward income.
Another area where blockchain technology can drive environmental sustainability is in waste management, which remains a major environmental issue, and traditional waste management systems are often inefficient and archaic. The recycling rate in the United States is only at 32%. Surely, we can do better!
Blockchain can be used to create a more efficient waste management system by creating a blockchain alternative for tracking waste products. We can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and improve the efficiency of the recycling process through NFT labeling or on-chain tracing for certain recyclables.
Blockchain technology has the potential to modernize the way we approach environmental sustainability. By creating a more transparent and accountable system, blockchain technology can help us to verify environmental claims and drive sustainable behavior around energy, waste and much more.
