Sony is venturing into the blockchain world with its new project, “Soneium.” This will be a layer-2 network built on top of the Ethereum blockchain, using technology from Optimism’s OP Stack to enhance its performance and scalability.
Sony Launches Its Own Blockchain: Introducing ‘Soneium
Sony, renowned for its Betamax and Walkman innovations from the 1970s, is now stepping into the blockchain arena.
In collaboration with Singapore’s Startale Labs, Sony Block Solutions Labs has unveiled “Soneium,” a new layer-2 network designed to operate on the Ethereum blockchain. This initiative marks a significant move by a major corporation to develop blockchain technology aimed at consumer applications.
Soneium is expected to launch its test network shortly. It will leverage optimistic rollup technology to facilitate more cost-effective transactions on Ethereum. The network will be constructed using Optimism’s OP Stack, which allows developers to build and customize their own blockchain networks while integrating with other projects in the “Superchain.”
Other prominent networks utilizing the OP Stack include Coinbase’s “Base” and Worldcoin’s “World Chain.”
Technology Partnerships and Compliance Features Enhance Soneium Testnet Launch
Web3 companies such as Optimism, Circle, Alchemy, The Graph, and Chainlink are coming on board as technology partners for the testnet launch of Soneium. These alliances are set to enhance Soneium’s blockchain functionality and performance.
The Soneium testnet will feature integrated tools to assist developers in complying with global regulations, making it easier to create applications that adhere to legal standards.
Sota Watanabe, director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, emphasized that Soneium aims to leverage Sony Group’s broad distribution network and established user base to create a widely appealing product. “With Soneium, we plan to deliver something that people will find valuable and that will extend beyond the Web3 niche,” he said.
The project will also explore how Soneium can integrate with existing Web3 services and may develop new solutions tied to Sony Group’s business ventures.
