Key Solutions from the European Blockchain Services PCP Program

  • The IOTA Foundation, in collaboration with the European Commission, has developed three blockchain-based solutions under the European Blockchain Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) program.
  • These initiatives also include Digital Product Passports for electronics and plastics, ensuring lifecycle traceability and Intellectual Property Rights.

The IOTA Foundation has been building revolutionary products across different industry verticals and has been working with the European Commission to get innovative blockchain-based solutions aimed at enhancing transparency across various sectors.

These initiatives, developed under the European Blockchain Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) program, focus on advancing blockchain technology solutions. Let’s take a look at the three strong projects worked out by the IOTA Foundation.

1. Digital Product Passport (DPP) for Electronics

Developed with the Technical University of Catalonia and eReuse, this IOTA tool tracks the entire lifecycle of electronic products, from raw material procurement to recycling. Moreover, leveraging IOTA Smart Contracts ensures accountability and transparency in managing the chemical content, breakdowns, and recycling procedures of electronic devices, per the CNF report.

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) encompasses a wide range of product types, including raw materials, components, new products, assembled modules, and individual items, using specific configurations and usage histories. In this case, the focus was on unique electronic and ICT products.

2. Digital Product Passport for Plastics

This DPP prototype, created in partnership with Digimarc and Agro2Circula, was designed to address plastic waste, especially in agro-plastic products. It tracks the lifecycle of plastic products, ensuring transparency from usage to disposal through recycling and upcycling, thus helping to reduce environmental impacts.

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) provide transparency and traceability throughout a product’s lifecycle. The DPP for Plastics prototype tracks the journey of plastic from its disposal by waste producers to its conversion into new market-ready products by manufacturers, including any intermediate commercial products along the way, reported CNF.

3. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Management Solution

Aimed at streamlining the licensing and royalties process for media, particularly music in films, this solution utilizes IOTA Smart Contracts to automate rights management and royalty payments. It also supports Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) for enhanced traceability and protection of creators’ compensation.

The IPR Marketplace prototype streamlines rights management by replacing traditional negotiations with automated, transparent digital contracts. This system ensures fair and immediate compensation for rights holders while leveraging non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to enhance transparency, as reported by CNF.

These innovations highlight IOTA’s commitment to advancing blockchain solutions that promote transparency and efficiency in electronics, environmental sustainability, and intellectual property management.
