FIFA launches a new blockchain for its NFT collections

FIFA, the highest governing body of international football, has announced a significant technological breakthrough: the launch of a new blockchain compatible with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) for NFTs.

This move marks a decisive step towards the adoption of more advanced technologies for the management of its NFT collections and digital experiences dedicated to fans.

The official announcement was released on April 30 and states that the new infrastructure, simply named “FIFA Blockchain”, will host the FIFA Collect platform, currently based on Algorand.

The migration of digital content is scheduled to start from May 20th, although the exact date will be confirmed later.

Why a new blockchain for FIFA NFTs?

According to what was stated by FIFA itself, the decision to switch to a new blockchain network arises from the need to ensure higher performance, improved scalability, and more advanced future functionalities

The compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine represents a strategic advantage, as it allows integration with an ecosystem already widely established and supported by numerous tools and digital wallets.

This transition will not only improve the user experience, but it will also allow FIFA to expand its digital offerings, paving the way for new forms of interaction with the fans and a more dynamic and accessible NFT market.

The FIFA Collect platform, which hosts the official NFTs related to the world of football, will be completely transferred to the new blockchain.

The migration will begin not before May 20th, but at the moment no action is required from users. FIFA has assured that, when the process starts, clear and detailed instructions will be provided to guide NFT holders through each phase.

One of the most significant changes concerns compatibility with digital wallets. After the migration, wallets based on Algorand — such as Pera and Defly — will no longer be supported.

In their place, users will be able to access FIFA Collect using MetaMask or other wallets compatible with EVM and WalletConnect.

Another important aspect concerns the collectible items listed for sale: these will be automatically transferred to the new platform and relisted for sale, unless users decide to remove them before the migration date.

FIFA’s Commitment to Web3

With this initiative, FIFA demonstrates a growing commitment in the world of Web3. A decentralized digital environment that is revolutionizing the way content is created, distributed, and monetized.

The introduction of the FIFA Blockchain represents a concrete step towards building an autonomous digital ecosystem. That is, capable of offering increasingly engaging experiences to fans all over the world.

EVM compatibility not only expands technical possibilities. However, it also makes the platform more accessible to a global community of developers and users already familiar with the Ethereum infrastructure.

Although FIFA has not yet revealed all the details about the future features of the new blockchain, it is reasonable to expect the introduction of new interactive experiences, exclusive events, and digital rewards for the most active fans.

The objective is to transform FIFA Collect into an increasingly central platform in the universe of digital soccer, capable of uniting collecting, technology, and sports passion.

The transition to a proprietary blockchain compatible with EVM could also pave the way for strategic partnerships with other Web3 projects. Thus further expanding the platform’s offering and visibility.

Transparent communication and user support

FIFA has emphasized that the migration will be managed transparently and with maximum support for the users.

No immediate actions will be required and all necessary instructions will be communicated in a timely manner. This approach aims to ensure a smooth transition, minimizing any inconvenience for NFT holders.

Furthermore, the decision to provide advance notice on the migration date and to offer the possibility to remove collectibles before the transfer demonstrates a particular attention to the protection of users and the responsible management of digital content.

The launch of the FIFA Blockchain represents a crucial moment in the digital evolution of the most important football federation in the world.

With the goal of offering superior performance, greater scalability, and new features, FIFA is preparing to redefine the way fans experience football in the digital world.

The migration of FIFA Collect from the Algorand blockchain to the new EVM-compatible network marks the beginning of a new phase. A phase in which technology and sport merge to create increasingly immersive and personalized experiences.

It remains to be seen how this innovation will be received by the community and what new opportunities will emerge for football fans around the world.
