Alex Thorn, who leads research at Galaxy Digital, shared his outlook on the U.S. potentially deepening its involvement with Bitcoin by formally building a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.
Speaking with Bloomberg Crypto, he suggested that beyond the Bitcoin the government already holds from seizures, there may be active purchases of BTC as early as 2025.
Thorn pointed to developments earlier in the year, when an executive order was issued to create a digital asset stockpile strategy. This directive not only barred the sale of existing Bitcoin holdings but also instructed the Commerce and Treasury departments to explore ways of acquiring more Bitcoin without affecting the federal budget.
Notably, the same order restricted purchases of altcoins and delegated their oversight to relevant agencie
He highlighted a broader shift in sentiment within key parts of the administration, noting that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has publicly framed Bitcoin as a store of value.
Meanwhile, figures like Bo Hines and David Sachs have continued to influence policy discussions around digital assets. According to Thorn, all signs point toward an eventual BTC acquisition.
As for how the U.S. might increase its Bitcoin reserves without dipping into public funds, Thorn outlined a potential path: converting altcoins from the digital asset stockpile directly into Bitcoin using trading pairs, without involving fiat currency. This, he explained, would allow the government to bolster the reserve while keeping with its budget-neutral commitment.
