The U.S. government’s stash of Bitcoin has dwindled far more than expected.
According to a newly released document dated July 15, 2025, the U.S. Marshals Service currently holds just 28,988 BTC—a staggering drop from past assumptions of nearly 200,000.
The updated figure surfaced in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, which revealed internal records compiled by the DOJ’s Asset Forfeiture Division.
Although portions of the report were redacted, it confirms that the federal government has liquidated the vast majority of its Bitcoin holdings—valued today at around $3.4 billion.
These assets were largely acquired through high-profile criminal seizures, including the Silk Road case.
While the US Marshals have long conducted public auctions to offload seized crypto, this latest update suggests the government’s once-massive reserves are nearly gone.
