The tokenized real-world asset (RWA) space is heating up—and three recent developments point to an accelerating shift in how traditional financial instruments are being reimagined on blockchain networks.
First, Brazil’s leading crypto exchange, Mercado Bitcoin, has begun tokenizing $200 million worth of fixed-income and equity assets on the XRP Ledger, marking one of the largest RWA integrations on the XRPL to date. Backed by Ripple, the initiative signals growing demand for blockchain-native infrastructure to handle mainstream financial products.
Second, institutional interest in asset tokenization continues to deepen. A joint report from Ripple and Boston Consulting Group projects that the total market cap of tokenized RWAs could soar to $19 trillion by 2033. With that kind of potential, firms across DeFi and TradFi are moving quickly to stake their claim.
Third, regulatory momentum and corporate M&A are shaping the space. Just this week, Ondo Finance acquired Oasis Pro, a firm licensed in the U.S. to facilitate digital securities trading. Meanwhile, Centrifuge announced its intention to tokenize the S&P 500, showing how tokenization could soon touch some of the most familiar financial indices.
However, the regulatory framework for tokenized equities remains murky. As BlackRock CEO Larry Fink pushes the SEC to provide clear rules for tokenizing stocks and bonds, experts warn that current tokenized offerings often lack shareholder rights and legal protections. According to John Murillo of B2BROKER, investors must do due diligence on whether these digital assets offer dividends, enforceable claims, or simply serve as symbolic exposure.
Still, with major players jumping in and use cases expanding fast, tokenization appears less like a trend—and more like the next evolution of capital markets.
