Square Adds Bitcoin Payments with Lightning Network Support

Square will soon let sellers accept bitcoin directly through its app. Block, Inc. plans to roll out this feature starting late 2025. A full launch is expected by 2026, pending regulatory approval.

Attendees at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas will be the first to try it. From May 27–29, visitors can test the new payment method at the BTC Inc. merchandise store.

Instead of slow, expensive blockchain confirmations, Square uses the Lightning Network. That means fast, cheap payments for both buyers and sellers.

Tools for Businesses Embracing Bitcoin

Square’s Point of Sale app now supports native bitcoin integration. Merchants can accept payments in bitcoin using their regular Square hardware.

This update builds on the 2024 Bitcoin Conversions feature. That tool lets sellers automatically convert a portion of daily sales into bitcoin.

Together, these features give merchants full flexibility with crypto. Sellers gain more control over their money and avoid costly payment processors.

Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block, says this change empowers small businesses. “Now a coffee shop can get paid instantly and keep more revenue,” he shared.

Paying is just as easy for customers. They scan a QR code and complete the transaction instantly. Square manages the exchange rate and confirmation behind the scenes.

Building a Bigger Bitcoin Ecosystem

Block already supports bitcoin through several products. Cash App enables bitcoin buying, selling, and transfers. Bitkey, its self-custody wallet, launched in March 2024.

Bitkey stands out with its secure recovery options. It doesn’t use seed phrases and includes an inheritance recovery tool for emergencies. In May, Block will add more privacy and security upgrades to the wallet.

On the mining side, Block created Proto. This line of products helps decentralize bitcoin mining. Builders worldwide get better access to mining tools, no matter their scale.

Spiral, another Block initiative, funds open-source bitcoin projects that focus on financial freedom.

Block continues pushing bitcoin into everyday life—one product at a time.
