Rising Institutional Demand for Bitcoin Custodial Wallets: Insights from CryptoQuant’s Ki Young Ju

According to a recent report by COINOTAG, the landscape of institutional investment in Bitcoin is significantly shifting. On October 29, CryptoQuant’s CEO, Ki Young Ju, noted an increasing demand for Bitcoin custodial wallets. Over the past year, U.S. spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced a net inflow of 278,000 Bitcoins, with a remarkable 80% of this influx attributed to retail investors. In contrast, large wallets—defined as those holding more than 1,000 Bitcoins, excluding exchanges and mining pools—saw net inflows of 670,000 Bitcoins. This suggests that the scale of institutional Bitcoin acquisition through custodial methods is approximately 2.4 times greater than that of ETF channels. Ju also elaborated that these ‘whale’ wallets represent a broader category than custodial wallets, illustrating the reality that most ETF wallets contain fewer than 1,000 Bitcoins, thereby providing a clearer picture of actual custodial holdings.
