The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, famous for making Bitcoin legal tender in September 2021, could win his re-election. The initial polls show that his party Nuevas Ideas has obtained 87% of the votes, but official numbers are still awaited.
El Salvador and the possible victory and re-election of President Bukele pro-bitcoin
In the preliminary count for the presidential elections in El Salvador, the Nuevas Ideas party seems to have obtained 87% of the votes. This would mean that candidate Nayib Bukele could win his re-election as President.
These are still preliminary surveys, not official numbers, although they have been published directly by the country’s electoral authority, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE).
Specifically, Bukele’s Nuevas Ideas party sees an advantage of over 1.1 million votes with 31.5% of the votes counted.
Following, then, there are the candidates Manuel Flores of the National Liberation Front Farabundo Martí (FMLN) party with just over 110,000 votes, and Joel Sánchez of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena) party with almost 97,000 votes.
With these unofficial numbers, the President who made Bitcoin legal currency in El Salvador in September 2021, seems to have won his second term.
El Salvador: President Nayib Bukele, a pro-bitcoin advocate, is already celebrating
While the official announcement has not yet arrived, it seems that Nayib Bukele’s victory as President of El Salvador for the second time is already confirmed.
On X, in fact, the same Bukele announced the survey, inviting his followers to celebrate together under the National Palace.
“According to our numbers, we won the presidential elections with over 85% of the votes and a minimum of 58 out of 60 deputies in the Assembly. A record in the entire democratic history of the world. See you at 9 PM in front of the National Palace. God bless El Salvador.”
“We are ready to celebrate, President @nayibbukele. #5More #NayibPresidente #Operation2024″
The survey on the use of Bitcoin in 2023
Last month, the José Simeón Canas Central American University in El Salvador had published the results of its Bitcoin survey for 2023.
In general, it seems that 12% of Salvadoran citizens have used BTC during the year for their purchases, but only 6.8% believe that using BTC improves their family economy.
Among its users, then, it seems that only 2% have used it at least 50 times, while 18% have stated that they have only used it once during 2023.
In addition, 77% of the interviewees had stated that having bitcoin as a legal currency does not change the family economy, which remains the same.
On the other hand, however, despite these numbers not fully supporting Bitcoin, there is only a small 3% of respondents who claim to have never used it.
