Astrobotic Technology, BitMEX, and Bitcoin Magazine have partnered to send the first Bitcoin to the moon. The parties plan to execute the trip in the summer from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
If achieved, this would mark a new frontier for the flagship cryptocurrency and a milestone in the technology’s evolution. It will also mark the climax of a two-year-long preparation that combines several elements in the physical Bitcoin’s space flight.
The team values the physical Bitcoin at 1 BTC and will engrave the public and private keys on it. Its design will allow people to interact with it from Earth and space. The interaction can be by sending Bitcoin ordinals to the moon. To pay tribute to Satoshi Nakamoto, a metal plate along with the physical Bitcoin will display the Genesis block.
Bitcoin’s space trip will mark the first Western soft lunar landing in over 40 years. It will represent the sustainability of the cryptocurrency and its cross-border capabilities. The last lunar exploration was NASA’s Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
Stephan Lutz, CEO & Group CFO at BitMEX, emphasized the trip’s significance and noted that Bitcoin would live forever in space as a monument. He said,
This is not just an achievement for BitMEX, but a breakthrough in human history, being the first-ever financial asset sent to space. We are excited to work with like-minded partners who share our goal to inspire all humankind to strive for a fair and equitable system of values, analogous to the birth of Bitcoin: an item of value independent of its creators or owners, 14 years ago.
Ceremonies around the proposed trip would include an auction for Bitcoin on the Moon rock, limited-edition commemorative coins and Ordinals, and other collectibles.
Bitcoin’s Moon trip could mark the beginning of other such events. When news about the trip broke two years ago, Elon Musk responded by tweeting, “A new space race has begun!”
