Longtime Bitcoin critic and gold advocate Peter Schiff has made a surprisingly self-aware confession: he may have inadvertently done more to promote Bitcoin adoption than most of its supporters.
In a tweet following the Bitcoin 2025 conference, Schiff wrote, “I’m likely responsible for more people owning Bitcoin than any other individual,” citing countless attendees who told him they bought BTC because of his anti-Bitcoin stance.
Known for his relentless criticism of BTC over the years, Schiff has often argued that the digital asset is worthless compared to gold. Yet in classic Schiff fashion—equal parts sarcasm and self-awareness—he now seems to embrace the irony. “Every time I tell you not to buy Bitcoin, you buy more,” he quipped.
In a follow-up post, Schiff noted that despite Bitcoiners blaming him for supposed missed profits, his vocal opposition may have had the opposite effect. “Many of them bought too. I’ve run into a few here,” he added, referring to conversations at the Bitcoin event.
While Schiff remains steadfast in his belief that Bitcoin is inferior to gold, the data point he unintentionally highlights is real: public figures—especially controversial ones—often accelerate adoption through criticism just as much as advocacy.
Whether or not he intended it, Peter Schiff may now be remembered as Bitcoin’s most effective reverse-marketer.
