NBA stars Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala will take a part of their salary in bitcoin and donate $1 million in BTC each to fans.
● The Golden State Warriors duo said in separate tweets on Monday that they will receive their salary in bitcoin as part of an arrangement with Cash App, a mobile payments service backed by Jack Dorsey’s Block, Inc (formerly Square).
● Thompson stated that “I’m with bitcoin because I believe it’s the future of money.”
● Iguodala, a three-time NBA champion, tweeted: “Bitcoin is the future, Klay Thompson and I are both believers.”
● The players said they will each be giving out $1 million in BTC to fans in order “to make bitcoin more accessible.”
● Thompson, a guard, and Iguodala, guard-forward, join a growing list of high-profile athletes to get their multi-million-dollar salaries paid in BTC.
● The trend, which started with NFL tackle Russel Okung in May 2019, now includes Odell Beckham Jr, the LA Rams wide receiver, New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley, and Cade Cunningham of Detroit Pistons, among others.
● Bitcoin’s safe-haven characteristics are a major pull factor not only for athletes but also for businesses and even nation-states.
