Metaplanet is pursuing a bold strategy to become one of the most dominant holders of Bitcoin globally, aiming to reach a scale that would make it nearly impossible for competitors to catch up.
According to a recent interview with the Financial Times, the company views the current market as a modern-day Bitcoin gold rush and is positioning itself to take maximum advantage before BTC becomes even harder to acquire.
The firm’s long-term goal is to accumulate 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027. This target would elevate Metaplanet to the second-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, trailing only Strategy, which currently leads the rankings. With 15,555 BTC already on its balance sheet, Metaplanet recently surpassed Coinbase in total holdings.
The strategy is structured in two phases. The first involves rapid accumulation of Bitcoin over a four-to-six-year period, aiming to reach a point of strategic dominance. In the second phase, the company plans to use its Bitcoin reserves as collateral to access capital, enabling it to acquire profitable, cash-generating businesses. This transition would effectively turn Metaplanet into a hybrid Bitcoin treasury and investment firm.
The company believes that once a sufficient level of Bitcoin is secured, its holdings will serve as a financial foundation for future growth, similar to how institutions use government bonds or securities. As Bitcoin’s availability continues to decline and competition for it increases, Metaplanet expects that acquiring additional BTC will become significantly more difficult—further reinforcing the value of its first-mover advantage.
