Under the radar just months ago, Metaplanet is now making headlines as one of the most aggressive Bitcoin accumulators in the public markets.
The Tokyo-based firm has quietly built up a massive BTC war chest, now totaling 13,350 Bitcoin, after its latest acquisition on June 30.
The company’s newest purchase added 1,005 BTC to its reserves at a price tag of roughly $108 million. That move alone pushed Metaplanet past high-profile holders such as Tesla and Galaxy Digital, placing it among the top five public companies with the largest Bitcoin holdings.
This isn’t just a lucky sprint — Metaplanet has been executing a relentless buying strategy. Over the past three months, it has acquired around 10,000 BTC, a feat that’s caught the attention of both crypto and traditional finance watchers. The firm’s ambition is clear: it’s aiming to control 1% of the entire Bitcoin supply by 2027, an aggressive benchmark that would require owning 210,000 BTC.
To fuel this expansion, Metaplanet recently issued nearly $208 million worth of new bonds — its 19th series to date — fully subscribed by EVO FUND. Proceeds from this bond round will go toward refinancing earlier debt and, more importantly, extending the firm’s crypto buying spree.
Behind this strategic play is CEO Simon Gerovich, who reminded investors that just a quarter ago the company held 3,350 BTC — a number that has since ballooned thanks to their assertive acquisition plan. Earlier in June, the company also revised its year-end BTC target to 30,000 coins.
Investors appear to be taking notice. Metaplanet’s stock has staged a sharp recovery after dipping below 1,500 JPY last week. It surged over 10% to reach 1,633 JPY, with U.S.-listed shares seeing close to one million in trading volume — a bullish sign that markets are warming up to the company’s crypto-heavy strategy.
While some firms tread carefully around Bitcoin, Metaplanet is doubling down. Its bold capital moves, paired with a clear long-term objective, are turning it into a central player in the digital asset ecosystem — and possibly a template for others looking to gain serious exposure to Bitcoin.
