A recent data breach reported in a customer relationship management (CRM) tool, Hubspot, turns out in data breach of BlockFi and Swan Bitcoin
In February, Panthera Capital, a well known venture capital firm, informed via Twitter about its compromise of the Hubspot account. Due to this, users started getting fake emails regarding the token sale of ‘Panter Coins’. At the time, the venture capital firm assured to resolve the issue ASAP.
Again the data breach at the tool Hubspot was reported to affect BlockFi and Swan Bitcoin this time. However, both companies have assured that there is no loss of treasuries affected or risked due to attack. Even after the firms have made it clear that they have situations under control, the skepticism regarding the threat on the platform remains.
As far as Hubspot is concerned, it’s a tool that many companies use to manage marketing campaigns and onboard new users. They do so as its a customer relations management tool that stores information of users, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, etc., for marketing purposes and to measure marketing campaigns’ effectiveness.
Since Hubspot is an external tool, it consists of information that is only relevant for identity, which is although an important concern but not as big as internal system damage. At the same time, information of users leaked to hackers. Both the companies said that passwords and several other internal pieces of information were safe and not affected by the attack.
Hubspot investigated and stated that the recent hack resulted from an illicit person trying to get access to an account belonging to an employee and using it to target the crypto industry’s stakeholders. The company revealed that approx 30 clients had been affected by the attack, although they did not publish any list.
Several users were reported receiving an uptick in the form of phishing emails from the companies during the weekend and tried to lure them into entering their password in some fake sites.
Back in 2020, when crypto lending protocol BlockFi faced a breach in the system after a SIM card of their employees was compromised that later ported over to an unregistered and unauthorized user, the firm took action for attack and hired a new chief security officer. Such actions taken by firms prove their priority towards safeguard and security.
About the recent attack, Hubspot had said nothing about the timeline of when the systems were compromised.
