Gold has decisively outpaced all major asset classes in 2025, posting a year-to-date gain of nearly 30%, according to data from Bloomberg and the Financial Times.
Among the 12 tracked asset classes, gold ranks first by a wide margin. Its performance reflects renewed investor demand for safe-haven assets amid geopolitical uncertainty, rising inflation concerns, and central bank accumulation.
BTC follows in second place, with strong double-digit gains, but still trails gold significantly. Despite digital assets often being dubbed “digital gold,” the physical metal has clearly reasserted its dominance this year.
Traditional Markets Struggle
Emerging market equities, the Swiss franc, and the Japanese yen round out the top five, each showing moderate gains. In contrast, U.S. stocks and industrial metals delivered flat to negative performance, while WTI crude oil, long-term Treasuries, and the U.S. dollar all posted declines.
The U.S. dollar is the worst performer year-to-date, down more than 5%, highlighting a shift in global capital flows and diminishing demand for the greenback.
Macro Trends Behind the Shift
Central bank diversification away from U.S. dollar reserves, combined with concerns about debt sustainability and inflation, appear to be fueling gold’s rally. At the same time, uncertainty over interest rate direction has weighed on U.S. fixed income assets.
If current trends hold, 2025 could mark a historic year for gold as the preferred hedge in an increasingly volatile macroeconomic landscape.
