Feds Push to Add Seized Bitcoin from 2025 to National Reserve

A new legal filing by the U.S. government could soon bolster America’s growing Bitcoin stockpile.

Prosecutors in Texas have launched a civil action to claim over $2.4 million worth of Bitcoin confiscated by the FBI earlier this year—part of a broader strategy to use seized digital assets to establish a national crypto reserve.

The Department of Justice filed the case last Thursday in the Northern District of Texas, requesting the forfeiture of 20.2 BTC linked to an individual allegedly tied to the notorious Chaos hacking group, a cybercrime syndicate known for orchestrating ransomware attacks. FBI agents in Dallas seized the funds on April 15.

The move follows an executive order signed in March by President Donald Trump, which outlined plans for a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve—comprised of assets recovered through criminal and civil forfeitures.

If approved, this latest batch of seized Bitcoin would be one of the first deposits toward that reserve.
