A major international fast food chain has officially integrated Bitcoin (BTC) payments across all of its global locations, wherever regulations allow.
The move, revealed from Steak ‘n Shake on May 27 at the Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, marks a significant milestone in bringing cryptocurrency to mainstream consumer commerce.
The company launched its Bitcoin payment system on May 16, utilizing the Lightning Network to facilitate fast, low-cost transactions—making BTC a more viable option for everyday purchases.
Strong Start with Surging Transaction Volume
The rollout has already exceeded expectations. On the very first day of launch, the fast food giant was responsible for 1 out of every 500 Bitcoin transactions globally. According to COO Dan Edwards, customer enthusiasm played a major role in the early success, as diners eagerly used Bitcoin in a real-world retail setting.
Edwards emphasized the importance of enabling seamless, real-time payments, and noted that adoption rates are growing steadily as users become more familiar with digital currency.
Bitcoin Goes Mainstream at the Counter
The announcement came during the opening of Bitcoin 2025, which also featured keynote speakers.
With this initiative, the fast food brand is helping push Bitcoin beyond its role as a store of value into the world of everyday commerce—a significant shift for both crypto and retail.
This development could set a precedent for other major restaurant and retail chains considering Lightning Network adoption. As crypto becomes more embedded in payment infrastructure, this fast food giant is leading the charge in merging blockchain technology with mainstream consumer behavior.
