Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has weighed in on US President Donald Trump’s proposed crypto reserve, suggesting that Bitcoin alone would be the best choice for the initiative.

“Bitcoin alone would probably be the best option. The simplest and clearest story as a successor to gold,” Armstrong wrote in a post on X late Sunday night.

He acknowledged that a market-cap-weighted index of crypto assets could be another approach, but argued that Bitcoin alone would be the simplest solution.

Armstrong’s comments came in response to Trump’s social media announcement announcing plans for a Crypto Strategic Reserve that includes Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), XRP, and Cardano (ADA). Trump stated that he had directed the crypto working group to move forward with the proposal.

However, BitMEX co-founder and former CEO Arthur Hayes was skeptical, describing the announcement as “nothing new” and questioning how the US government would finance the purchase of digital assets.

“Just words. Let me know when they get congressional approval to borrow money or push the price of gold even higher,” Hayes wrote on X. “Without that, they don’t have the money to buy Bitcoin and shitcoins.”

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) took a more optimistic stance, urging the community to focus on long-term growth.

“Calm down guys. No need to overanalyze,” CZ wrote, along with a screenshot of Trump’s post. “More ‘crypto’ will likely be added over time. More countries will follow. This is a great start to something really good. Be happy. Keep building,” he wrote.

As debate continues over the makeup of the U.S. crypto reserve, industry leaders remain divided over whether the government should take a Bitcoin-only approach or diversify its holdings. All eyes are now on the March 7 White House Crypto Summit, where more policy details could emerge.
