Pieter Wuillie minimizes his role as a Bitcoin contributor.
On Thursday, core Bitcoin developer Peter Wuillie requested that his key be removed from the trusted keys on the Bitcoin Github, indicating his desire to step down as Bitcoin core maintainer.
“To be clear: I won’t stop contributing to code, review, and all the projects I’m involved in. It just so happens I’m not doing much maintenance anymore, so it’s time to drop my permissions,” Wuillie tweeted, clarifying his stance and the reason for his decision.

It is worth noting that as the core maintainer of the Bitcoin code, Wuillie has had several significant contributions. Wuillie’s contributions include; Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 32, which ushered in the use of seed phrases for easier private keys recovery, Segregated Witness (SegWit) for better block data storage, and Taproot (BIPs 340, 341, and 342), which have provided the bedrock for scalability innovations on the celebrated blockchain.
Notably, Bitcoin’s code is open source and, as such, allows for open source developers to study it, make recommendations, and test it. However, access to the core, the most used software to link to the Bitcoin network, is restricted to a select few called core developers who can make changes to the code.
Wuillie joins the likes of John Newbery, Samuel Dobson, and Jonas Schnelli, who have also left their roles in recent years. At the time of writing, only Wladimir J. van der Laan, Marco Falke, Michael Ford, and Hennadii Stepanov remain core developers with access to the Bitcoin Core.
So far, Wuillie’s exit as a core maintainer has been met with much appreciation from the crypto community for his contributions. “Cheers Pieter. Thanks for all the fish,” tweeted Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson quoting the 4th book of the “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.”
