According to a recent SEC 13F filing, Brown University has made its first known investment in Bitcoin, acquiring $4.9 million worth of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) in Q1 2025.
The Ivy League school purchased 105,000 shares of the ETF, which now represents about 2.3% of its $216 million in reported equity holdings.
This move marks a significant step into digital assets for one of the U.S.’s most prestigious academic institutions. Brown joins a growing list of traditional and institutional investors seeking regulated exposure to Bitcoin through spot ETFs rather than holding the asset directly.
The filing underscores Bitcoin’s increasing appeal among legacy organizations looking to balance innovation with compliance in their investment strategies.
