In a significant move, BlackRock has bolstered the custodial framework of its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) by formalizing Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. as a secondary custodian.
This development was officially disclosed in a Form 8-K filing on April 7, 2025, marking a key step toward enhancing the trust’s security and operational redundancy.
Dual-Custodian Model Enhances Security and Flexibility
The new arrangement introduces a dual-custodian structure, with Anchorage Digital joining Coinbase in safeguarding the Bitcoin reserves of IBIT. Under the terms of the agreement, Anchorage will serve as a backup custodian to support the trust’s risk management practices. While no assets will be transferred immediately, Anchorage’s cold storage services, alongside its insurance coverage, will provide added protection for the Bitcoin assets in the trust.
This addition of a second custodian is part of BlackRock’s strategy to ensure the resilience and scalability of IBIT, making it a more robust investment vehicle. The operational structure remains unchanged, and the trust’s investment approach will continue to follow the original mechanics without disruption.
Strengthening Custodial Security Amid Increased Demand
The inclusion of Anchorage Digital as a secondary custodian comes at a time when IBIT has seen growing success, securing its position as one of the top-performing Bitcoin ETFs in terms of inflows. BlackRock’s decision reflects the anticipated growth of Bitcoin holdings within the trust, as well as a clear need for greater operational redundancy to protect against potential custodial disruptions.
With Anchorage regulated by the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the move signals BlackRock’s preference for institutions that comply with federal banking regulations. This step enhances IBIT’s appeal to institutional investors seeking a secure and stable platform for exposure to Bitcoin, offering further credibility to the trust’s operational model.
Ensuring Long-Term Stability in the Crypto Investment Space
By integrating Anchorage’s digital asset banking services, BlackRock ensures that IBIT remains resilient in the face of operational, regulatory, and technical challenges. The addition of a qualified custodian provides investors with greater confidence in the long-term stability and security of their investments in IBIT, positioning the trust for continued growth in the rapidly evolving crypto asset landscape.
