In a rare and alarming disclosure, BlackRock — the world’s largest asset manager — has added quantum computing as a potential threat in its latest Bitcoin ETF filing.
The firm warns that if quantum computing technology advances significantly, it could undermine the cryptographic foundation of the Bitcoin network.
The filing states that “there is a risk that quantum computing could result in the cryptography underlying the Bitcoin network becoming ineffective,” potentially allowing malicious actors to breach wallets — including those containing institutional BTC funds.
This is one of the first times a major Bitcoin ETF filing has openly acknowledged the threat posed by quantum advancements. If realized, such risks could lead to substantial losses for shareholders and disrupt trust in Bitcoin’s long-term security model.
The mention has stirred concerns across the crypto space, underscoring the need for post-quantum cryptographic solutions as a growing priority.
