Donald Trump, known for his support for Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies, said he would dismiss SEC Chairman Gary Gensler as soon as he took office, while Gensler announced that he would resign from his position as SEC Chairman on January 20.
While people were wondering who Trump would nominate to be SEC chair instead of Gensler following this announcement, a new report came from FOX Business reporter Eleanor Terrett.
The Fox reporter said sources said Trump will announce a candidate to replace Gary Gensler tomorrow.
Who Can Be Nominated for SEC Chair?
While there are many names that could replace Gary Gensler, the most prominent candidate is former SEC member Paul Atkins.
Other than Paul Atkins, Robinhood Chief Legal Officer Dan Gallagher, Willkie Law Firm Partner Robert Stebbins, and current SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda are among the popular candidates.
While there is curiosity about who Trump will nominate to be SEC chairman, the person he nominates will need to be approved by the Senate to head the agency.
SEC Chairman Gary Gensler Is Resigning!
Gary Gensler has served as the institution’s 33rd president since April 17, 2021. However, he will step down from his position on January 20, 2025.
Gensler has increased oversight of the cryptocurrency sector during his tenure, imposing sanctions on many cryptocurrency companies for fraud and securities registration violations.
Despite these lawsuits and sanctions, the SEC under Gensler also approved both spot and futures Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.
