The monkeys are coming as copycats on the new bitcoin based NFT protocol called Ordinals.
A team from Dubai is launching 10,000 BAYC BTC, as well as some monkeys with Satoshi masks.
They are not affiliated with Yuga Labs, the creator of BAYC which runs on ethereum, raising potential copyrights issues.
But for now they selling the NFTs at a flat price of 0.01 bitcoin, hoping to emulate the recent CryptoPunks copycat that had the Ordinal Punk NFT #620 sold for 9.5 BTC (~$215,000).
That follows some controversy regarding the Ordinals protocol, which stores the data on the 75% fee discounted segregated witnesses (segwit), with Blockstream’s president Adam Back even calling at one point for miners to censor it.
The protocol however has seen some popularity with it sending bitcoin blocks to 3.5 MB, up from the usual 1MB.
That may bring some much needed fees to the network, but for how long it is unclear considering that for now it’s just copycats.
