What To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount+, Showtime And More

The crazy thing about this week’s streaming guide isn’t what’s new, but what’s over. For weeks now I’ve posted about Yellowjackets, Succession and Barry and all three of those shows wrapped up their seasons last weekend. The second two wrapped up entirely, each offering up tremendous series finales. Yellowjackets . . . well it ended season 2, but not how we hoped.

Of the major series I’ve been writing about, only two are left: From and Fear The Walking Dead. The former is excellent. It has slumped a little in Season 2, but its most recent episode was a real banger. FTWD, on the other hand, continues to be appallingly incompetent, stupid and absurd. I’m shocked it’s still going.

In any case, today I’ll list a couple new shows and then some of the great movies that have been added to various streaming services since a lot of movies are added at the beginning of the month. These aren’t necessarily new, mind you, but they’re great and it’s always nice to get some movie recommendations.

New Shows This Weekend

The Idol (HBO Max)

I thought it was fitting to include an image from this show at the top of this post since it stars The Weeknd and this is a weekend streaming guide. The singer stars across from Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp. The reviews for this one are dreadful. It’s one of the buzziest shows of the year given its stars, but also one of the worst-reviewed. Then again, Florida Man reviewed terribly and the one episode of that show I’ve watched so far was pretty good, so who knows? I’ll be watching and reviewing at least the premiere.

The Days (Netflix)

This is basically the same concept as Chernobyl, but instead of Russia it takes place in Japan in the days following the disastrous Fukushima nuclear power plant breach during the 2011 tsunami. Sounds quite compelling!

New Movies To Stream This Weekend

Again, these are not new movies, just newly streaming movies.

On Netflix

Two of my favorite movies from my childhood have been added back to Netflix. Groundhog Day is one of Bill Murray’s best, and inspiration for a whole sub-genre of films and TV shows that deal with time-loops. The best Peter Pan movie ever made—Hookis also now on Netflix. Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan playing across from Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook and Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell. It can’t be beat! Also, Rufio—aka Dante Basco, who would later voice Zuko in Avatar The Last Airbender.

If you’re feeling jazzed about Spider-Man given how amazing Across The Spider-Verse is (go see it in theaters!) all three of the Toby Maguire Spider-Man films just swung onto Netflix this week as well.

On Showtime

1917 is one of the best war movies ever made, and one of my favorite modern films. I’ve seen it three times and I’ll see it again soon enough, I’m sure. The WWI film was just added to Showtime.

If you want to go a little more old-school, you can watch one of the most ridiculously entertaining action films ever made in Face/Off, starring Nic Cage and John Travolta. I haven’t seen this movie in a couple decades, so I’m definitely watching it this weekend.

Lots of other good stuff on Showtime including a bunch of Friday the 13th movies, Full Metal Jacket and the best Steven King movie ever, Misery.

On HBO Max

The excellent Western 3:10 To Yuma, starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe was just added to Max. Based on Elmore Leonard’s 1953 short story “Three-Ten to Yuma”, the film is at once a gripping action flick and a surprisingly powerful drama.

If you’re looking for something a bit more retro—and a lot sillier—Army Of Darkness was also just added to Max. Fans of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead series will definitely want to watch this ridiculous Bruce Campbell flick.

On Paramount+

The first four Mission Impossible movies just arrived on Paramount+ so you can catch up on the Tom Cruise thrillers before Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 12th. If you want some other good thrillers, both Harrison Ford’s Patriot Games and the delightful True Lies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis were also just added.

For Western fans, Tombstone has slung its way onto the streamer as well. Kurt Russell is a great Wyatt Earp, but Val Kilmer really steals the show as Doc Holliday.

I’m your huckleberry.

In Theaters

I’ve seen two movies in the theaters this week and I enjoyed both. I went into The Little Mermaid very skeptical but ended up really enjoying it. It’s not perfect—the new songs are forgettable duds—but it’s still one of the best live-action Disney remakes. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is an animated masterpiece, however, so if I had to pick between the two I’d go see that one.

What are you watching this weekend? Should I add anything to this list? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.
