Alicia Keys’s Musical ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ Sets Its Premiere Date

Alicia Keys has written a musical, and now a date has been set when fans of the singer-songwriter can see the new show.

The highly anticipated musical Hell’s Kitchen is set to make its world premiere at New York’s Public Theater Off Broadway this fall. The Keys-led production will be a captivating addition to the 2023-24 season, which was unveiled in full on Thursday (June 1). The musical features music and lyrics by Keys herself, while Kristoffer Diaz penned the book.

Previews for the musical will kick off at the Public Theater on October 24, followed by a grand opening night on November 19. Hell’s Kitchen is slated to run through December 10.

The stellar cast of the upcoming musical includes renowned talents such as Shoshana Bean, Brandon Victor Dixon, Chad Carstarphen, and many more. Michael Greif has been announced as Hell’s Kitchen’s director, while Camille A. Brown will reportedly handle the choreography.

Deadline describes the musical as such: “a coming-of-age story set in a cramped apartment in the neighborhood of the title near Times Square, where 17-year-old Ali is desperate to get her piece of the New York dream. Ali’s mother is just as determined to protect her daughter from the same mistakes she made. When Ali falls for a talented young drummer, both mother and daughter must face hard truths about race, defiance, and growing up.”

Hell’s Kitchen marks Keys’ first proper foray into the theater world. She recently wrapped her recording contract with RCA Records with the two-part album Alicia and Keys, released in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and then the Christmas set Santa Baby, which arrived in late 2022.

Keys has been busy exploring other avenues than writing and recording albums recently. She hosted the Grammys for several years, earning an Emmy nomination for her effort. Now, she’s running headfirst into theater, and if Hell’s Kitchen performs well, the show may soon see its way to Broadway, which opens her up for Tony Award consideration.
