Yoon Hyun-Min’s ‘True To Love’ Character Is All About Sincerity

At the start of the k-comedy True To Love, publisher Su-hyeok has not yet met dating coach Bo-ra, but he’s sure he dislikes her. Su-hyeok, played by Yoon Hyun-min, is not a fan of the bestselling author and finds her dating approach to be insincere. Even though Bo-ra, played by Yoo In-na, might be a profitable author for his publishing company to acquire, he doesn’t want to promote the dating formula she’s selling.

“Su-hyeok is someone who thinks sincerity is the most important thing when it comes to dating,” said Yoon. “I think that’s why he couldn’t help but dislike her. He also ended up breaking up with his girlfriend due to Bo-ra’s dating advice, so I think that’s another reason for him to dislike her.”

Although he initially comes across as hard-hearted, Su-hyeok is really soft-hearted and that’s what made it appealing to play him.

“Su-hyeok seems a bit prickly, but he’s actually warmer than anyone else on the inside,” said Yoon. “As the episodes go by, you see more of his warmth and I hope you’ll watch this part carefully. Moreover, it’s a fun element to be able to see Su-hyeok grow in terms of dating as he meets Bo-ra and changes. These things appealed to me about playing Lee Su-hyeok.”

While Su-hyeok suffers in his own relationship because he finds it hard to commit, his real relationship flaw is his inability to communicate.

“I think Lee Su-hyeok is unskilled at expressing himself to his partner and finds it difficult,” said Yoon.

That’s something that dating coach Bo-ra aka Deborah can help him with. Although Su-hyeok would never consult a dating coach, especially Bo-ra, when he coaches her through her own dating woes the two grow closer. Bo-ra is confident she knows the rules for finding lasting love, but one day she realizes her boyfriend will never propose and he’s also cheating on her. Maybe her rules need a rewrite and who better to help her rewrite them than a book publisher like Su-hyeok.

True To Love is not Yoon’s first rom-com role and he enjoys the genre. Everyone can relate.

“It’s the same reason why I picked the rom-com True to Love,” he said. “The fact that viewers can have empathy and get immersed. I think True to Love is especially like that. The stories of different couples and the various emotions we feel while dating can also be empathized and immersed in while acting, so it feels like we are communicating in both directions.”

While viewers may know the actor from TV dramas such as A Witch’s Love, Discovery of Love, Beating Again, My Daughter Geum Sa-wol, Tunnel, My Holo Love or Men Are Men, Yoon initially started out as a baseball player, first playing for Korea’s Hanwha Eagles and later for the Doosan Bears. He quit sports in 2007 and turned to acting.

“I watched a performance and fell in love with the energy of the actors,” said Yoon. “And I became curious about the job of an actor, so I challenged myself. Acting felt more suitable for me than playing baseball had. Fortunately, I was able to do diverse work, because of luck, and I am very grateful.”

True To Love airs on Amazon Prime.
