It’s Tuesday, May 23rd and we’re here to solve this Wordle, but I thought it would be interesting to look back in time at some of the big, important historical events that took place on this day throughout history. It turns out, this is a day of scoundrels, rogues and martyrs.

Let’s dive right in:

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “clerk” has an interesting etymology. It originates from the Old English word “clerc,” which was derived from the Late Latin word “clericus.” The term “clericus” referred to a clergyman or a member of the clergy.

Over time, the meaning of “clerk” evolved and expanded to include individuals who were educated and literate, often associated with administrative or clerical duties. In medieval times, clerks were typically associated with religious institutions, as they were often the only ones who were literate and capable of handling written records.

Eventually, the term “clerk” became more generalized and referred to individuals who performed various administrative or secretarial tasks, such as record-keeping, writing, or managing accounts. The word “clerk” is still commonly used today to describe someone who works in an office or performs administrative duties.

It is worth noting that the pronunciation of “clerk” has changed over time. In Old English, it was pronounced as “klarc,” while in modern English, the “er” sound became more prevalent, leading to the pronunciation “klurk.”

Wordle Bot Analysis

After I complete a Wordle I always head over to check in with Wordle Bot to see how I scored, both in terms of each individual guess and whether or not I outsmarted the Bot.

I waffled a bit over my starting word today but eventually settled on spore which felt like one of those Wordle Bot-approved openers. Sure enough, only 34 words remained after my first guess.

I decided right away that I needed to guess all new letters in my second guess. I already had one green box. Best to eliminate options than take a wild swing. Chain was a better guess than I could have predicted, getting me the green ‘C’ and leaving me with only one option: clerk for the win!

Today’s Score: I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 points for tying Wordle Bot, for a grand total of 1 point. Huzzah!
