Democrats Push To Expel George Santos From Congress

Topline

Dozens of House Democrats indicated Tuesday they plan to force a vote on a resolution to expel Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) from Congress, less than a week after the first-term congressman pleaded not guilty to fraud charges, the latest in a series of scandals that have plagued the New York representative in his first four months in office.

Key Facts

The resolution was introduced by Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and has almost 50 Democratic co-sponsors—but it will need the support of two-thirds of the House in order to pass, meaning some Republicans will need to back the move.

Because the motion is a “privileged resolution,” it will trigger a procedural vote in the next two days, a move by Democrats likely to work around the Republican majority, although Republicans can still block the measure.

Garcia’s resolution has the support of Democratic leadership, Axios reported, citing an unnamed leadership aide.

For many House Republicans, a vote on Santos’ potential expulsion will be the first time they go on the record on whether the embattled congressman should stay on the Hill, Garcia told reporters Tuesday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
